Winnipeg: The Vedanta Society of Winnipeg

The Vivekananda Statue in Winnipeg:

To commemorate this historical journey, a bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda was permanently installed on June 8, 2013, at the Neeginan Centre (the site of the former CP Railway Station where he stopped). The statue was sponsored by the Vedanta Society of Winnipeg and officially unveiled by Swami Girishanandaji Maharaj, a trustee traveling directly from Belur Math, India.

History:

Founded on February 8, 1992, the Vedanta Society of Winnipeg was established under the spiritual guidance of Swami Pramathananda, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order.

•  Affiliation: It operates as a registered Canadian charity closely associated with the Vedanta Society of Toronto, which is officially affiliated with the headquarters at Belur Math.

•  Leadership: Swami Kripamayananda (the Minister-in-charge of the Toronto center) serves as the President of the Winnipeg society.

• Activities: The society organizes local spiritual discourses, scripture classes, retreats, and holy celebrations (such as the birthdays of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi). Monks from Belur Math occasionally visit Winnipeg to lead these programs.

Swami Vivekananda’s Historical Connection to Winnipeg:

Winnipeg holds a unique place in the history of the Ramakrishna movement. On his way to address the historic 1893 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, Swami Vivekananda traveled across Canada via the Canadian Pacific Railway. He boarded the train in Vancouver and endured a grueling 60-hour journey, arriving at the Winnipeg CP Railway Station late on July 30, 1893.

He stayed on the railway car overnight before continuing his journey to Chicago the next morning.
